Northern governors kick against power rotation to the South.

The Northern governors issued a press statement insisting on this stance after their meeting in Kaduna on the 28th of September 2019. This is in response to the position earlier taken by their Southern counterparts that the country’s next president should naturally be selected from the South of the Niger.

Simon Bako Lalong, the Plateau State Governor and present Chairman of the Northern Forum, after the meeting, stated that: “The statement is quite contradictory with the provision of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999) as amended that the elected President shall secure at least 25 percent of the votes cast in 2/3 states of the federation. In the case of run-up, a simple majority wins the election. He further opined that “In the case of run-up, simple majority wins the election.”
