The South-South governors on Monday 5th of October 2021 floated the establishment of a joint regional security outfit with the sole prerogative to tackle the menace of insecurity in the region.

In a statement signed by the South-South leaders’ chairman, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, stated in a communique, “Bearing in mind that most of the BRACED states have established their state security’s organs, we approved the regional security architecture, which will be launched very soon.”

This development is coming months after their counterpart in the South West and South East have established similar security outfits. The resolution to establish a security outfit was part of the decision reached at the end of their meeting held on Monday at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

The development comes in tandem with the establishment of security outfits by other state governors as the clamor for state police heightened amidst unchecked security challenges ravaging the country.

It must be noted however that the president, Muhammadu Buhari is yet to assent to the various requests by state governors for the express creation of state-run police to address the security challenges facing the country Nigeria.
