So much pressure has been mounted on President Muhammadu Buhari, ever since the amended Electoral Act bill 2021 was brought to him on November 19. The Electoral Act Amendment Bill, which was passed by the National Assembly on November 19, has not been signed by the President.
Will Buhari sign Electoral Act Bill?
One of the key provisions of the amended law is the electronic transmission of results and the adoption of the direct primary by all political parties. Going further, the stakeholders appear to have agreed to the ideas of the electronic transmission of results. There is an ongoing dispute on the compulsory adoption of the primary by political parties.
Many governors have supported the process of indirect system, where delegates are required to elect the candidates. Some of the governors are standing on their ground that each party should be allowed to choose its preferred voting system. With the ongoing opposition to the direct mode of primary for political parties by state governors, this may influence the president not to sign the bill.
So many criticisms are been made as the president is yet to sign the bill. The bill was received by the president on the 19th of November. He has until December 19th to sign it into law. The president has made comments about the bill and also written a letter to the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, who in return has responded to the president’s letter, saying, “It is satisfied with the amended Electoral Act”.
