It is disheartening that the Russia invasion of Ukraine is not ending anytime soon. An American award-winning journalist Brent Renaud, was killed in Ukraine by Russian forces. The American journalist was said to be reporting in a district city of Kyiv before the unfortunate incident took place.
The late journalist who was first rumoured to be working for the New York Times was said to be driving alongside another reporter towards a Ukraine check-point when Russian forces attacked the car the journalist and his colleagues were travelling in.
Will there be justice for the American journalist?
The late journalist was a 50-year-old filmmaker who had cemented a good name for himself winning several awards. It was reported that the journalist had greatly worked freelance for The New York Times, mostly in 2015. However, it was also noted that the American journalist was not assigned to Ukraine by The New York Times, but was said to be working on a Time Studio project focusing on the global refugee catastrophe.
According to the deputy managing editor of the New York Times, Clifford Levy, “The New York Times is deeply saddened to learn of the death of an American journalist in Ukraine, Brent Renaud. Brent was a talented photographer and film-maker, but he was not on assignment for the New York Times in Ukraine. Early reports that he worked for Times circulated because he was wearing a Times press badge, he had been issued for an assignment many years ago.”
Brent’s death is a terrible loss. Brave journalists like Brent take tremendous risks to bear witness and to tell the world about the devastation and suffering caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.” He added.
The late journalist was said to be accompanied by Arrendondo, 45-year-old World Press Photo Winner, he stated, “I and Renaud gone to Irpin to film refugees escaping the town, and we were fired on by forces near a checkpoint.
We crossed the first bridge in Irpin. We were going to film all the refugees leaving. We got into a car … Someone offered to take us to the other bridge and we crossed a checkpoint and they started shooting at us, so, the driver turned around, and they kept shooting … and there was two of us. My friend is Brent Renaud and he’s been shot and left behind.” He added.
This is no shock as the Russian President Vladimir Putin, and his forces have targeted mosques, schools, hospitals in Ukraine. Will there be justices for Brent Renaud? Or did he die for the Russia unprovoked invasion of Ukraine?
