The ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine has escalated in the last couple of days as key cities like Kharkiv, Odessa and Mariupol remain on the brink of collapse. This is due to continuous missile strikes and bombings in these cities. 

Since the outbreak of war, the UN states over a million refugees have fled Ukraine. Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia facility, which is acknowledged to be Europe’s biggest nuclear power plant, has been ensnared by Russian troops after they attacked the site in the early hours of Friday the 4th of March.

Russia missile strikes in Ukraine

The strike led to a fire breaking out in an adjacent training facility, sparking fears of a nuclear disaster. Speaking on the threat of a nuclear disaster, Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky stated, “The world should wake up now”, however, the president has urged Vladimir Putin, to meet for talks.

Kyiv and Moscow have concurred with a tentative plan to create humanitarian corridors following the second round of negotiations. While Kherson is under Russian control, including the capital, Kyiv, northeastern Kharkiv, and Mariupol are still holding out.

Russia’s airstrikes against the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv were thought to have killed 33 people but the figure has now risen to 47.

It must be noted that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station in Enerhodar Ukraine, is the largest nuclear plant in Europe and amongst the 10 largest in the world. It is based in southeastern Ukraine near the city of Enerhodar, on the southern shore of Kakhovka Reservoir on the Dnieper River.
