The former governor of the Nigerian Central Bank recalls the gun battle between the police officers detailed to protect him and gunmen who invaded the events he was at in Isuofia Aguata LGA of Anambra State of Nigeria.

Soludo recounts 15 minutes of gun battle attack on him.

Soludo stated he had initially assumed upon hearing gunshots that it was the policemen who were firing into the air to register their presence. He said the meeting was in disarray as everyone took to their heels. He further stated, they came back after some time to discover the dead bodies of the three police officers attached to his security detail.

“Just as I was about to wrap up, I said, finally, for them to open up for comments, questions, and answers. Gunshot! At first, I thought maybe the policemen were shooting in the air, concurring with the kind of exuberance in the hall itself,” he said.

“Until I began to hear people screaming and all of that and everybody began to scamper for safety. Then, it took several minutes, more than ten, fifteen minutes of continuous gun battle going back and forth and stopping and starting again.

“By the time we all came back, we saw three bodies lying in the pool of their blood. They were the three policemen. May God grant their souls eternal rest.”

He however whittled down the possibility of the attack being politically motivated.
