ASUU declares one month warning strike.

Today 14th February 2022, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has decided to embark on a one-month warning strike  as the Federal Government is yet to honour the agreement earlier signed. According to the union, the strike is set up for the Federal Government to do the needful, or else the union would go on an indefinite strike.

“We just want to give the government a long rope hoping that it would see the need to avoid a total paralysis of academic activities in the nation’s universities. We are parents too and have our children in the system but we cannot watch and allow the total collapse of education in the country.

“Our agitation is in the interest of all and if the system is made better, we will all enjoy it. Prominent personalities in the country have waded into the matter but the government seems recalcitrant. Our National President would explain more when he briefs the press later today.”

However, it must be noted that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been confronted with some issues such as the payment of Earned Academic Allowance, revitalization fund, the replacement of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System, the University Transparency and Accountability System( UTAS). The union had expressed dissatisfaction over the failure of the Federal Government to fulfill some of the agreements it made with it, as far back as 2009.

“The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is a Nigerian union of university academic staff, founded in 1978. Professor Victor Emmanuel Osodeke emerges as the body’s President on May 30, 2021, according to Information provided on Edu stuff. The ASUU was formed in 1978, a successor to the Nigerian Association of University Teachers formed in 1965 and covering academic staff in all of the Federal and State Universities in the country.

The Union was active in struggles against the military regime during the 1980s. In 1988 the union organized a National Strike to obtain fair wages and university autonomy. As a result, the ASUU was proscribed on 7 August 1988 and all its property seized. It was allowed to resume in 1990, but after another strike was again banned on 23 August 1992. However, an agreement was reached on 3 September 1992 that met several of the union’s demands including the right of workers to collective bargaining. The ASUU organized further strikes in 1994 and 1996, protesting against the dismissal of staff by the Sani Abacha military regime”. THIS SECTION IS CULLED FROM WIKIPEDIA.
