15-year-old Kamila Valieva, broke down on the ice rink after competing in the Winter Olympics for the first time since her crashed drugs test. She nailed first place in the women’s singles short program event. The 15-year-old Russian was emotional when she secured the top score of 82.16 despite stumbling on a jump.
The skating star broke into tears on the ice as the emotions of the past few days appeared to catch up with her. It could be recalled sometimes in December that the skating star had tested positive for a banned substance. Officials are still investigating whether the skating star or her entourage broke anti-doping rules.
According to Kamila Valieva’s coach, Eteri Tutberidze, she stated Valieva had blamed the doping violation when she tested positive for a heart medication that experts say can improve stamina. Her team later claimed the doping claim is as a result of a mix-up with her grandfather’s medication.
Despite the ongoing drug controversy, a top court on Monday freed Kamila Valieva to compete in the women’s singles competition, one of the most high-profile events of the Winter Olympics.
Peter Terry a professor in psychology at the University of Southern Queensland, who has worked with Olympic athletes at nine previous Olympic Games, stated, “She’d have been trained in relaxation techniques, in mindfulness training — that’s fairly standard for elite athletes, and she would be trying to normalize things as much as possible,” he concluded.
